Classes of medication
Antihypertensives (Capoten, Apresoline, Aldomet and Minipress, Catapres, Vasotec, Accupril, Monopril, Zestril, Altace)
Antihypertensive medications are used to control hypertension/high blood pressure. They work by expanding your blood vessels, allowing your blood to flow more freely, therefore decreasing your blood pressure.
When you first start taking these medications, you may feel dizzy and lightheaded; but your body will adjust to these effects after a short period of time. Other side effects can include fever, skin rash, itching, headache, impotence, and fatigue. If any of these side effects seem extreme or unusual, notify your doctor.
Be careful if you will be drinking alcohol while on these medications -alcohol may cause you to feel faint or dizzy.
Different types of antihypertensives have different instructions, and may cause different side effects:
- Capoten/Vasotec
These antihypertensives should be taken at regular intervals and on an empty stomach. It may affect your taste sensation (such as a metallic taste).
- Catapres
This antihypertensive may cause the following side effects:
- Dry mouth
- Swollen feet or ankles
- Cold sensation in your fingers and toes
- Nightmares
- Apresoline
This antihypertensive should be taken at regular intervals, and with food. Side effects may include headache, anorexia, nausea and vomiting, diarrhea, or depression.
- Mini press
For the first 24 hours you take this antihypertensive or increase the dosage, avoid driving or participating in any hazardous tasks.
- Aldomet
This antihypertensive may cause the following side effects:
- Sleepiness -Headache
- Weakness
- Nightmares
- Accupril, Monopril, Zestril, Altace
This antihypertensives may cause the following side effects:
- Cough
- Headache
- Dizziness
- Fatigue
