Oakwood Healthcare System now offers free, wireless Internet access to patients and guests

Here’s how it works. Oakwood patients (with permission from their physician/caregiver), family members and other guests can now use their own wireless devices (i.e. laptop computer, PDA) to access the Internet for free in designated areas of Oakwood’s four hospitals and two Rehabilitation and Skilled Nursing Centers.

Identified wireless Internet “hot spots” include: patient rooms, atriums, main lobbies, cafeterias, physician lounges and dining areas, Operating Room waiting areas, and public waiting areas. However, wireless devices are prohibited in critical care units, surgical areas, and other areas defined by Oakwood’s device management policy.

Before patients or guests can log onto a Web site or check e-mail, a legal disclaimer outlining appropriate usage will appear on the screen. In addition, Oakwood’s existing Web filtering system will also restrict access to inappropriate Internet sites.

The free, wireless Internet service is a great way for patients to keep in touch with family and friends through e-mail. And visitors can stay productive while staying with a patient.
