Loretta McNamara
Registered Respiratory Therapist

“I’ve worked at Oakwood since 1990. A typical workday revolves around administering respiratory care to adult critical care patients. My responsibilities include evaluating the patient, prescribing treatments and performing therapies. What I like best about my job is that it provides me with the opportunity to use my education, by allowing me to demonstrate my assessment skills and then performing therapies within the context of clinical protocols.

I am surrounded by the greatest group of co-workers and supervisors, which makes my job so much easier. I can count on the skill level of my peers and I respect their judgment and opinions…we work as a group to provide the best care for our patients. The medical director backs us up and provides opportunities to learn with in-service training and is very flexible. I know this sounds like a cliché, but the staff in this department is really tight knit and everybody works well together.”

Certified Surgical Assistant

“ Surgery is a team effort with different professionals from varying backgrounds working cohesively to render the best in patient care. The Certified Surgical Assistant is one of these and works under the direct supervision of the surgeon and in coordination with the surgical team. We function in the main operating room, outpatient surgery, Labor & Delivery, Endoscopy, and procedures performed at bedside. Our primary function is to be an extra pair of hands and eyes for the surgeon during the procedure. Some of our duties include patient transferring, positioning, prepping, control of bleeding, exposure, closure of the surgical incision and dressing application.

Over the years, my role at Oakwood has remained the same, but my skill set utilizing my knowledge of anatomy and surgical technique is always evolving. This is due primarily to the advances in technology such as DaVinci robotics, endovascular AAA repair, lasers, stereotactic, ultrasound, and laparoscopy, just to name a few. Since no two days are ever the same, I am always ready to see what the day may bring.”

Staff Pharmacist

“Although I’ve only been working here for two years I had an interest in working at Oakwood because of the organizations reputation combined with the small hospital atmosphere Heritage offers. I really like being able to work in both the clinical and operational areas of the pharmacy in a cutting edge environment that is complimented by a staff that treats one another like family. You can’t ask for a better combination. On a daily basis I participate in a variety of clinical pharmacy services as well as unit dose cart checking, IV admixture, physician order computer verification (technician order entry) and I’m a member of the medication reconciliation committee meetings.”

Chris Helms

Chris Helms
RT, CT Technologist

“Believe it or not I started volunteering at Oakwood when I was just 16 years old. Although I helped in many areas of the hospital, it was my time working in the Radiology Department that made me realize I wanted to pursue a career in that field. I also like that I’ve been able to work at more than one of Oakwood’s facilities. I have recommended this organization to many friends and family throughout the years because it has proven to be a very special place to me. “On a day-to-day basis my work involves performing diagnostic procedures such as CAT scans. I work closely with our Emergency Department staff and our Radiologist. We also have a state-of-the-art Picture Archive and Communication System (PACS), which allows us to transform CT scans from film to digital computer images. This makes it much more convenient and accessible to view a patient’s study.”

“I can honestly say I never have the same day twice. As the Critical Care Specialist, I participate in ICU rounds, develop and implement drug therapy protocols supported by evidence-based medicine, participate in several multidisciplinary committees and act as a liaison between nursing, physicians and the Pharmacy Department. In my role, I also precept pharmacy students. I would recommend a career at Oakwood if you want to develop lasting professional relationships and provide quality patient care.
