U.S. News Ranks Oakwood hospitals among best in area

The Oakwood Hospital & Medical Center (OHMC) in Dearborn is among the top five hospitals in the Detroit metro area, according to the U.S. News & World Report.

The OHMC been ranked fifth in the Detroit metro area. in U.S. News Media & World Report’s 2011-12 Best Hospital rankings, which is available online at www.usnews.com/besthospitals. The rankings, annually published by U.S. News for the past 22 years, will also be featured in the U.S. News Best Hospitals guidebook, which will go on sale August 30. “It’s an honor to be recognized for the quality services we provide,” said Brian Connolly, president and chief executive officer of Oakwood Healthcare. “I’m proud of all of our employees who take the extra steps to ensure our patients are well-cared for and have a positive overall experience. The Oakwood Southshore Medical Center (OSMC) was ranked #18 in the metro area, and Oakwood Annapolis Hospital (OAH) came in at #21. Oakwood Heritage Hospital (OHH) in Taylor was ranked #25 among hospitals in the Detroit metro area.

Several individual departments at (OHMC) were ranked as high-performers, including: Cancer, Cardiology & Heart Surgery, Gastroenterology, Geriatrics, Gynecology, Nephrology, Neurology & Neurosurgery,Orthopedics, Pulmonology and Urology.

At OSMC, the Diabetes & Endocrinology, Gynecology, Pulmonology and Urology departments all earned high marks. At OAH, the Diabetes & Endocrinology and Nephrology services earned distinctions, while the Nephrology Department at OHH was recognized as a high-performer, too.

The core mission of the Best Hospitals ranking is to help guide patients who need an especially high level of care because of a difficult surgery, a challenging condition, or added risk because of other health problems or age, said Avery Comarow, U.S. News Health Rankings Editor. The latest rankings showcase 720 hospitals out of about 5,000 hospitals nationwide. Each is ranked among the country’s top hospitals in at least one medical specialty and/or ranked among the best hospitals in its metro area.

“These are hospitals we call ‘high performers.’ They are fully capable of giving most patients first-rate care, even if they have serious conditions or need demanding procedures,” Comarow said.

The rankings cover 16 medical specialties and all 94 metro areas that have at least 500,000 residents.
