Oakwood partners with AHA to promote healthy lifestyles
Friday, April 06, 2012
Oakwood healthcare teamed up with the American Heart Association (AHA) today to promote healthy lifestyles.
Hundreds of Oakwood employees at 12 different sites took time out to celebrate National Walk Day with a stroll around their workplaces.
“The message today is simple; walk more, eat right, live longer,” said Kathy Kauffmann, executive director of the American Heart Association for Southeastern Michigan. “Research has shown that the benefits of walking and moderate physical activity for as little as 30 minutes each day can help reduce the risk of heart disease. It also improves circulation, lowers cholesterol and blood pressure, all while promoting weight loss.”
Dearborn Mayor Jack O’Reilly was one of the special guests at the Oakwood Hospital & Medical Center, where local celebrities such as Fox 2 News Anchor Ron Savage, WWJ Radio personality Marie Osborne and Roary, the Detroit Lions’ mascot, helped set the tone for the event.
“I’m delighted to participate in an event that encourages Americans to get up and moving,” Savage, who is also a firefighter, told the crowd. “Thanks to the American Heart Association and Oakwood Healthcare, today we are making health a priority for ourselves and our loved ones.”
Doug Welday, division president and executive vice president of operations for Oakwood Healthcare, said the healthcare system was happy to participate.
“As a healthcare system, we have a responsibility to set a good example for others,” said Welday. “We need to work together to make sure that physical activity continues to be a part of everyday life, and that we’re modeling an active lifestyle for the individuals and communities we serve.”
At Oakwood Heritage Hospital in Taylor, Kauffmann congratulated Oakwood on being a Fit Friendly Company and said the AHA was proud to partner with Oakwood.
“It’s been shown that every hour spent walking adds two hours to your life,” she said. “The return on investment of one hour of walking is very significant for your life. That’s the main reason why we want to do things like this.”
Osborne added that she was impressed with the turnout, both from Oakwood staff and the community.
“I applaud Oakwood Healthcare and the American Heart Association for their continued efforts in creating a healthier community and educating us all on how we can be triumphant in the fight against heart disease,” she said.
Dearborn Mayor Jack O'Reilly (center) and Doug Welday, division president and executive vice president of operations for Oakwood Healthcare, celebrated National Walk Day. Roary, the Detroit Lions' mascot, showed his 'pride,' too.
