It is now easier and safer than ever to be screened for breast cancer throughout the Oakwood Healthcare System.
Oakwood now offers fully digital mammography services at the Oakwood Imaging Center-Canton. With this most recent addition, the mammography services across the Oakwood Healthcare System are now 100 percent fully digital, according to Tim Vargas, Administrator, Imaging Services for Oakwood Healthcare, Inc.
“We continue to invest in new technology to bring the best possible care to our patients,” said Vargas. “By providing this service in Canton—along with at our breast care centers in Dearborn, Trenton and Wayne—we are ensuring that our patients have access to the highest quality services available.”
Mammograms, widely considered to be the most effect tool for early diagnosis of breast tumors, are essentially an examination of the breast using x-rays. Mammograms play a central part in early detection of breast cancers because they can show changes in the breast up to two years before a patient or physician can feel them. Digital mammograms allow radiologists to alter the orientation, magnification, brightness and contrast to produce images of the breast that can be seen on a computer screen. The Computer-Aided Detection (CAD) uses a digitized mammographic image to search for abnormal areas of density, mass or calcification that may indicate the presence of cancer. It takes a clearer picture, creates a more-defined image and takes less time than traditional x-rays.
“A digital mammogram provides more accurate information, improves patient care, and provides greater peace of mind,” said Vargas. “Because the images are so precise, it virtually eliminates the need for technical call backs and repeats.”
Physicians recommend women have a mammogram every two years after they reach the age of 40 and every year after they reach the age of 50.
