Oakwood adds Transitional Year residency program at Heritage Hospital
Tuesday, July 24, 2012
Oakwood Heritage Hospital (OHH) is now the official home to additional medical education residents.
The Transitional Year (TY) Education Program at OHH has received initial accreditation from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), according to
Falgun Patel, MD
, director of Transitional Year (TY) Education Program at Heritage Hospital. The two-year initial accreditation is effective as of July 1, 2011. The program was approved after a site visit in October 2011 and subsequent Residency Review Committee (RRC) decision in May of 2012. The hospital’s one-year TY residency training program accepts four new residents each year, according to Dr. Patel.
“With large clinical volume and sub-specialty representation in internal medicine, physical medicine and rehabilitation, and orthopedic surgery, the Oakwood program offers comprehensive training in all facets of general medical care needed for a transitional internship,” he said. “These four residents will be part of a the total complement of 40 residents in education programs based at
Oakwood Heritage Hospital
, some of which are in proud partnership with The Wayne State University School of Medicine.”
Dr. Patel will direct OHH’s new TY residency training program for the teaching of graduate physicians requiring internships prior to entering other subspecialty training programs such as anesthesiology and ophthalmology. In addition, in this role he will work closely with the OHMC Internal Medicine residency and WSUSOM Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation program. Both of these programs have been, and will continue to be, integral to the new program’s success.
Dr. Patel received his Bachelor of Science from Kalamazoo College in Kalamazoo, Michigan and completed his medical degree at Wayne State University School of Medicine (WSUSOM) in Detroit. He completed his residency in internal medicine at Oakwood Hospital and Medical Center (OHMC) in Dearborn. Dr. Patel has served as program director for the TY program since its inception in 2011, Director for Medical Students since 2006 and is an academic hospitalist at both OHH and OHMC. He has presented and published research during his service at Oakwood, as well as received numerous teaching awards. He is a member of several professional societies, including the Society for Hospital Medicine.
In addition, Dr. Patel serves as clinical faculty at WSU
School of Medicine
, and he is currently Director for Medical Students and oversees the Oakwood WSU Clinical Campus for their medical students rotating at Oakwood.
Oakwood Heritage Hospital is the host or participating site for the following medical education programs – Orthopaedic Surgery, Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, Transitional Year, Ophthalmology and Internal Medicine.
