Canton, Oakwood kick off 100 Days to Health

With help from Oakwood Healthcare, Inc., Canton Township kicked off its 100 Days to Health program on Saturday.

Now in its 11th year, the program is designed to encourage people to live a healthier lifestyle and provide them the resources to do so, said Kathy McCarthy, Health & Wellness coordinator for Canton Township’s Leisure Services Department.

“It provides a low cost way for our participants to work toward their health goals, whatever they may be,” she said.

Participants pay a one-time registration fee for the program, which typically runs from January through April. Residents pay $15 and non-residents, $25, which grants them five visits to Canton’s Summit on the Park recreation center as well as a host of fitness activities, conferences, classes—anything from practical nutrition to zumba—along with demonstrations and special events.

Oakwood has been the primary sponsor since 2008. Oakwood Community Health nurses provided free blood pressure and blood glucose screenings at the kick-off event and Oakwood clinicians and other professionals will speak on different health and healthcare topics throughout the program. The next class will be at noon on Jan. 23, entitled ‘Safe Living in the Mature Adult Household’ with Scott Stockinger, RN, EMT-P.

“Oakwood has always had a strong focus on working in the communities we serve,” said Michael Madigan, Community Relations Specialist for Oakwood. “It was a natural for us to be involved in this.”

McCarthy said the 100 Days to Health has proved to be a popular program since it was implemented more than a decade ago.

“It’s a great program that covers any kind of resolution people are looking at, regarding their health,” she said. “It’s a great deal.”
