Reproductive Genetic Counseling Services

Director of Program
Dr. Julie Zenger Hain

Oakwood provides Reproductive Genetic Counseling Services in cooperation with the Maternal Fetal Medicine Department at Oakwood Hospital - Dearborn in Dearborn. Our services include consultations for a variety of reasons, and patients are typically referred from their obstetrician or primary care physician.

Some of the common reasons that people are referred for genetic counseling include:

  • Women who will be 35 years old or older at the time their babies are born.
  • Women who have positive maternal serum screening results during their current pregnancy.
  • Parents who have fetal ultrasound findings of concern.
  • Women who have concerns about medications or infections during pregnancy.
  • Couples who have experienced multiple miscarriages.
  • Individuals who have a family history and/or you have a personal history of a genetic condition.  Some examples include NF, Marfan Syndrome, forms of dwarfism, fragile X syndrome, etc.
  • Couples in which one or both partners are carriers of a genetic condition such as sickle cell anemia or cystic fibrosis.

We typically meet with parents during a pregnancy and with couples who are considering becoming pregnant. During your visit with us, you meet one-on-one with a genetic counselor for 45-60 minutes.  You will also meet one of Oakwood's board-certified Maternal Fetal Medicine Obstetricians at this consultation.  We will discuss your personal medical history, your pregnancy history, and your family history. We will provide you with an overview of genetic information appropriate for your situation, and will inform you of any genetic testing options that may be available to you.

As you know, genetic testing can be complex and we strive to provide you accurate and detailed information about the risks, benefits, and limitations of genetic testing. It is our goal that, at the end of our consultation, you leave feeling informed and empowered to make important decisions about your current or future pregnancy.

We work closely with the doctors of Maternal Fetal Medicine, and genetic consultations typically take place in the Fetal Diagnostic Center at Oakwood Hospital -  Dearborn. In addition to your genetic counseling session, many women have other services, such as a fetal ultrasound or amniocentesis, performed during their visit. Therefore, you may also meet our ultrasonographers or nurses at your visit to the department.

For more information on what will happen during your appointment, visit the "What to Expect during your initial visit" section.

You may also benefit by completing a family health portrait. The U.S. Surgeon General's office has created a computerized tool to help make it fun and easy for you to create a sophisticated portrait of your family's health. You should only use the information in combination with your healthcare provider. It can be a valuable tool for discussion, risk assessments and medical advice. Click here to begin.
