The Oakwood family of employees, physicians and volunteers do their best to make patients feel right at home during their stay, and that means going above and beyond to help with the total healing process. Oakwood now proudly presents the “Arts for the Spirit” (AFTS) program – featuring six monthly volunteer artists at our four hospitals and two rehabilitation and skilled nursing centers.
Harpists, pianists, fiddlers, gospel singers, salsa and Middle Eastern bands, school choirs and jazz musicians are opening up their hearts to bring a little bit of joy to Oakwood’s patients, visitors and staff. AFTS offers flexible times and dates for artists who may want to give back to the community, try new material or get publicity before a major concert. The performances range from 30 minutes to an hour. Some patients and guests stay for a few moments or for the entire performance. We get satisfaction in seeing our patients and their families (as well as our staff) enjoy a few soothing moments in what could be an otherwise stressful day.
If you or someone you know would like to perform for the AFTS program, please call Oakwood Community Outreach and Public Relations Specialist Zana Macki at 313.586.4902 or e-mail her at mackiz@oakwood.org. Funding for the AFTS program is made possible by a grant from the Oakwood foundation.
