Cardiac Rehab
Cardiac rehabilitation is designed for people who have experienced a cardiac event, such as a heart attack, angioplasty, stent, bypass surgery, chronic angina or chest discomfort, a heart valve procedure or a heart/lung transplant. Oakwood’s goal is to help patients return to as normal and healthy a lifestyle as possible after a cardiac or vascular event. The American Heart Association highly recommends that cardiac patients participate in an outpatient cardiac rehabilitation program, designed to:
Restore patients to optimal health after a cardiac event
Reduce the risk of future cardiac problems
Prevent the progression of heart disease
After you have been home for one to three weeks, you should be ready to enter the outpatient program. Once we receive a written referral from your physician, an orientation interview will be arranged. Based on the results of your medical information, an individualized exercise program will then be prescribed. Your classes meet three times per week. Your heart rate, EKG, and blood pressure will be monitored during class for four to 12 weeks while you are exercising on treadmills, stationary bicycles, arm ergometers, recumbent steppers and more. You will also perform exercises to develop musculoskeletal strength and flexibility. You'll learn to monitor your own heart rate, exercise safely, and know your own limits. The facility is equipped with showers, locker rooms, and emergency equipment. In addition to exercise, you will participate in informal education classes addressing risk factors for coronary artery disease, heart-healthy nutrition, medications, and safe and effective exercise. Heart-healthy cooking demonstrations are also available.
