Allow me to introduce our program by telling you a little about ourselves. We are the oldest Family Medicine Residency Program in Michigan and rest on a strong infrastructure to support our curriculum. Unopposed in a 259-bed community hospital, the Oakwood Hospital - Wayne Residency Program is nestled within a dominant healthcare system in Southeast Michigan. With 620 beds, Oakwood Main, as a full-service teaching hospital for more than 50 years, offers all the benefits of a major tertiary hub just miles away. Oakwood's major affiliation with Wayne State University, a top research center, underscores the academic amenities available to our program.
The ultimate mission of the Oakwood Family Medicine Residency Program is to prepare its residents to practice in any environment. This means teaching our residents how to do everything within the broad scope of Family Medicine. During their time with us, our residents learn state-of-the-art, evidence-based obstetrical, pediatric, adult, and geriatric care. This training occurs within the Circle-of-Care model that is foundational to our philosophy. In the Circle-of-Care, the same doctor cares for the patient as he or she transitions through different healthcare settings, including the outpatient center, the hospital, and senior housing.
With the growing need for healthcare in the elderly population, we have placed a strong emphasis on Geriatric training for our residents. The Geriatric fellowship and our unique Housecalls program provide excellent opportunities for a well-rounded experience. Additional focus areas of our program are procedural training and practice management. Graduates of our program are trained to be proficient in a wide variety of procedures and educated about managing a medical practice and the business of medicine. Our culturally diverse faculty and residents coupled with our proximity to the World Gateway has challenged us to expand our scope of practice globally. Participation in an international medical experience is encouraged.
Beyond our primary goal of comprehensive clinical competence, we are committed to developing our residents as 21st century leaders in health care. We inform and encourage residents to become active members and leaders in the local, state, and national academies such as the MAFP. While we realize our residents have varying interests and ideas about what scope of practice their future career will include, we believe that it is our mission to ensure that they can do any and all of these things if they so choose, literally in any environment. Our residents choose the program for this reason.
Our dually accredited Family Medicine Residency Program looks forward to welcoming ten new residents each year. New residents quickly become part of our Oakwood Family Medicine residency “family” and start to develop their skills in Oakwood's large community medical center setting. Our faculty love to teach and our program fosters supportive, collegial relationships between residents and faculty in order to help residents reach their goals. The curriculum offers a wide variety of primary care and subspecialty experiences.
Our renewed maximum 5-year accreditation in 2012 by the Residency Review Committee allows us to keep fine-tuning all elements of our program to maintain excellence and growth. The recent approval of our Operative Obstetrics Fellowship in 2008 are major testaments to this effort. With a favorable Joint Commission Survey at our outpatient center in 2008, we are focusing our efforts on full implementation of the “medical home” model. Our site has been e-prescribing and e-ordering labs & referrals since 2005 in anticipation of continuing EMR roll-outs. We are committed to academic preparedness as evidenced by our graduates’ ongoing 100% board passage rate. Likewise, we regard our 100% Match fill rate over many years as another vital sign of a healthy program. We are proud of our program’s history and excited about its’ future! On behalf of the entire faculty and residents, I wish to thank you for the time and consideration you are giving our program and invite your inquiries!
