Oakwood doctor honored by Braylon Edwards Foundation

Dr. Michael Hicks, MD, an OB/GYN with the Oakwood Healthcare System, was honored by the Braylon Edwards Foundation for his impact in the greater Detroit community.

Hicks was one of three honorees at the fourth annual The Women Moving Forward and Reaching Back Brunch, which recognizes individuals who have made an impact in the areas of education, health and philanthropy.

“There has never been a more critical time to do positive and impactful work than now,” said Edwards, a native Detroiter and founder of The Braylon Edwards Foundation. The foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to addressing and meeting the educational needs of under-served. The Foundation's goal, said Edwards, is to emphasize the importance of education by providing scholarships and incentives to youth who demonstrate strong commitment and effort to excel in academics, conduct and community volunteerism. The Foundation also supports and contributes to organization's whose programming includes health and hunger prevention.

“It is important to give back to the community,” said Hicks, who is affiliated with the Oakwood Hospital & Medical Center in Dearborn.

Other honorees included Eleanor Josaitis of Focus: HOPE, and Gail Perry-Mason of Money Matters for Youth. The guest speaker at the event, which took place on June 18, was Emmy award-winning actress and philanthropist, Cicely Tyson. Detroit City Council President, Charles Pugh also addressed the importance of reaching back and rebuilding Detroit.

“Congratulations to Dr. Hicks for his efforts to live Oakwood’s core values and for his accountability to our mission by providing excellence in care, healing and health to the individuals and communities we serve,” said Nancy Gray, administrator of clinical services for Oakwood Healthcare, Inc. “We are fortunate to have him on our team.”

Hicks earned his medical degree at the University of Alabama School of Medicine. He was honored as a ‘Top Doc’ by Hour Detroit Magazine in 2009 and 2010.
