Oakwood welcomes Wyandotte practice

Wyandotte, Mich. – When Robert Sharon, MD, helped cut the ribbon in front of his building at 1700 Biddle last week, he said it was about more than unveiling a new sign, it was about bringing two entities together: The City of Wyandotte and the Oakwood Healthcare System (OHS).

Sharon, along with city officials and Oakwood executives, celebrated the new partnership on Tuesday that saw the former Wyandotte Internal Medicine Associates center at 1700 Biddle Ave. become the Oakwood Medical Center—Wyandotte. Sharon and the six physicians in his practice joined the Oakwood Physicians Network in January.

“This is a special day for the City of Wyandotte and Oakwood Healthcare,” said Sharon.

Sharon has operated the practice for more than a dozen years, and explored the possibility of partnering with Oakwood since last fall. The two sides came to an agreement in December and made it official in January. Six months may have gone by, said Sharon, but the honeymoon isn’t over yet.

Three previous mayors joined incumbent Mayor Joe Peterson to welcome the new partnership. Pederson said he was happy to have such a prominent practice in the city and added that they were an important part of it.

“They’re family to us,” said Peterson. “They’re not just nurses and individuals who work in this building. They’re part of our neighborhood.”
In addition to Sharon, physicians include: Angela DeSantis, MD, Lily Go, MD; Aruna Lanka, MD; Nina Nayak, MD; Ralph Raper, MD and Robert Russ, MD. All seven physicians completed their residency at the Oakwood Hospital & Medical Center (OHMC) in Dearborn. Nurse Practitioners are Monique Dulecki, NP and Karen Bochenek, NP. Nichole Barkoff is a Physician’s Assistant. There are nearly 40 staff members, all together.

Doug Welday, executive vice president and Chief Financial Officer (CFO) of Oakwood Healthcare, said the partnership was an important one for Oakwood for several reasons.

“Oakwood has not had a significant presence in the City of Wyandotte, although we are in the surrounding area in a number of places,” said Welday. “We are, frankly, thrilled to be here and to have created a clinical and professional partnership with this team.

“This is clearly a beautiful facility and we’re proud to have the Oakwood logo on this facility,” he added.

Sharon said that patients wouldn’t recognize any disruption to the care they’ve received and will continue to receive through the facility.

“At the end of the day, all that really matters here is providing incredible healthcare to the citizens not only of this town, but to the citizens of Ecorse, River Rouge, Southgate, Trenton…that’s what we do here,” said Sharon.
