Oakwood hosts State Rep. Darany for site visit

Dearborn, Mich. – July  State Rep. George Darany (D-Dearborn) said sometimes, seeing is believing.

Darany, a former Dearborn City Councilman who was elected to the state legislature, said he had always heard good things about the Oakwood Hospital & Medical Center (OHMC) in Dearborn, and that reputation was confirmed Friday when he was allowed to tour parts of the facility.

“It was very impressive; very eye-opening,” said Darany, who serves on the House Health Policy Committee. “I always knew we were living in the 21st Century, but it’s another thing entirely to see the technology in person.”

Darany was given a tour of the Cyberknife suite—one of three in Michigan—as well as the catheterization laboratories where experts explained how advances in technology helped cardiologists save lives. Darany also visited the new interfaith Sanctuary, dedicated this year after a $1 million fund-raising campaign, which provides space for people of all faiths to worship. He and Oakwood officials then discussed health policy issues and their potential impact on health systems throughout the state and the nation, in general.

“It’s encouraging to see someone with such a strong community background representing Dearborn in Lansing,” said Mary Zatina, senior vice president of government relations and corporate communications for Oakwood Healthcare, Inc. “We look forward to working with him during an exciting, yet challenging time for the health care industry.”

Darany said the tour gave him a better perspective on some of the issues facing the industry, as well.

“It was very informative,” said Darany. “It’s important for me to know Oakwood’s concerns so I can express them in committee meetings.”
