U.S. News ranks all four Oakwood hospitals as high performers

All four Oakwood hospitals are among the best in the region, according to the U.S. News & World Report.

The organization routinely ranks hospitals across the nation in 16 different specialties. While only 140 of the 4,825 hospitals evaluated across the country performed well enough to rank in even one specialty, three Oakwood acute-care hospitals were ranked as high performers in several categories.

The Oakwood Hospital & Medical Center (OHMC) was ranked fifth in the region with high-performing specialties in cancer, gastroenterology, geriatrics, gynecology, heart surgery, nephrology (kidney disorders), neurology and neurosurgery, orthopedics, pulmonology and urology. Oakwood Southshore Medical Center (OSMC) was ranked 18th, with high-performing specialties in diabetes and endocrinology, gynecology, pulmonology and urology. Oakwood Annapolis Hospital (OAH) was ranked 21st, with high-performing specialties in diabetes and endocrinology and nephrology. Oakwood Heritage Hospital (OHH) came in at 25th, with a high-performing specialty in nephrology.

The U.S. News & World Report uses several factors to determine if hospitals are considered high-performers in any specialty, including: hard data—such as mortality rates, volumes and patient safety scores—and care-related indicators like nurse-to-patient ratios, translation services and palliative care. They also factor in the adoption of technology, such as digital mammography and robotic surgery, and reputation scores—which are taken from surveys of physicians who are asked to name hospitals they consider tops in their specialty.
