Oakwood now offers advanced neuro-intervention and neuro-imaging services
Wednesday, November 21, 2012
Oakwood Healthcare is combining the latest imaging technology and most advanced neurovascular procedures into a program designed to improve
treatment for stroke
victims and ensure they’ll recover as fully as possible.
“The neuro-interventional program provides rapid and comprehensive diagnosis and treatment for all types of advanced neurovascular disease,” said
Samuel Tsappidi, MD
, a neuro-interventional specialist and director of the program at the Oakwood Hospital & Medical Center (OHMC). “The result is increased quality of acute stroke care with improved outcomes and shorter hospital stays for our patients.”
Through the program, Oakwood surgeons use the latest neuro-imaging techniques—including low-dose 64 and 160-slice CT scanners and MRI units—to quickly diagnose and treat stroke victims using a life-saving IV tPA enzyme that helps dissolve blood clots and has proven to be effective when administered within the first 60 minutes of stroke onset. This new technology allows for advanced imaging techniques, improved contrast resolution, reduction in radiation exposure to the patient and a more comprehensive view of neurovascular structures.
“Rapid diagnosis and treatment for emergent stroke symptoms and other neurovascular conditions and emergencies are crucial components of achieving the best outcomes for patients,” said Dr. Tsappidi.
Neuro-interventional techniques can replace surgery in some cases and are generally easier for patients to tolerate as they involve no large incisions, less risk, less pain and shorter recovery times.
“These elective interventions of the brain require only a short, overnight stay at the hospital,” said
Frederick Junn, MD
, medical director for Neurosciences at Oakwood Healthcare. “In many cases, they are outpatient procedures.”
