Oakwood honored with Governor’s Awards for quality, collaboration

Oakwood Healthcare System as a whole and two of its hospitals were recently recipients of two 2014 Governor’s Awards of Excellence from Gov. Rick Snyder and MPRO, Michigan’s Medicare Quality Improvement organization. Oakwood Healthcare was honored for outstanding achievement in improving care transitions within the community for its collaboration with The Senior Alliance, Garden City Hospital and St. Mary’s Hospital – an effort that resulted in a significant reduction in readmissions. In addition, Oakwood hospitals in Taylor and Trenton were recognized for outstanding inpatient clinical achievement in the acute care hospital setting. To achieve this honor, both acute care sites reduced 30-day hospital readmissions.

Gov. Snyder recently presented the awards to 188 Michigan hospitals in partnership with MPRO. “This award demonstrates Michigan’s deep commitment to providing high quality, safe and efficient health care,” said Snyder. “By using proven, evidence-based practices, these organizations are making sure individuals get the right care at the right time.” The award recognizes participants for their dedication to improve health care quality and patient safety in Michigan. To be eligible for the award, participating organizations must have achieved, maintained and continually improved specific and rigorous quality measures.

“We’re very fortunate to be able to partner with Oakwood Healthcare and other dedicated organizations across the state of Michigan,” said MPRO President and Chief Executive Officer Robert Yellen, MPH, J.D., FACHE. “To be able to recognize these accomplishments with the Governor’s office underscores the importance of these efforts to improve health care quality in the state.” The award criteria are based on the National Quality Strategy, Partnership for Patients, and Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) Quality Improvement Organizations’ 10th Statement of Work. The preventive care metrics also align with the Governor’s Healthy Michigan 4x4 plan.

“Oakwood has a tradition of clinical excellence as a result of our overall dedication to quality, safety, service and care delivery. These awards are yet another demonstration of the team’s focus on the complete patient experience,” said Barbara R. Medvec RN, MSA, MSN, senior vice president and chief nursing officer, Oakwood Healthcare. “Our strong performance is a true reflection of our physicians, nurses, quality liaisons and other team members working together to achieve such exceptional quality and I am very proud of these achievements,” said Medvec.

“We at Oakwood are committed to improving quality by embedding patient safety into the practices of daily care delivery,” states Sara Atwell, Oakwood’s Chief Quality & Patient Safety Officer. “It is an honor to receive recognition for the work we do every day in service to our patients.”
