Oakwood, Detroit Symphony Orchestra form partnership

Oakwood Healthcare has partnered with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra (DSO) to bring the finest in live music to the community.

Beginning the week of May 28, Oakwood will bring musicians from the world-renowned DSO to the Oakwood Common Retirement Community off Rotunda Drive.

“The DSO is excited to partner with Oakwood to expand the reach and impact of our wellness programs in Dearborn and beyond,” said Kareem George, managing director of community programs for the DSO. “Live music transforms the healthcare environment. We look forward to launching this multifaceted partnership with Oakwood and providing an enriching musical experience for residents, staff and families of Oakwood Common.”

On May 28, a bassoon quarter of Robert Williams, Victoria King, Michael Ma and Marcus Schoon will entertain the crowd. The performance is open to the public.

Oakwood’s dedication to the arts dates back several years, to the implementation of the Arts for the Spirit program in 2006. Through the program, Oakwood has developed arts exhibits in each of its four hospitals, created a creative writing program for the community and for residents at Oakwood Common, and more.

“One of our highest priorities is to create a restorative atmosphere that renews the human spirit and extends the mission of Oakwood Healthcare: To provide excellence in care, healing and health to the individuals and communities we serve,” said Judith McNeeley, manager of Public Relations for Oakwood Healthcare. “Music is a big part of the healing culture and we’re happy to partner with such a wonderful organization.”

McNeeley said she expects to schedule other events with the DSO soon. Also, a program with the Detroit Institute of Arts is on the way, too.

“This is just the beginning of these partnerships,” she said. “We’re looking forward to working with these organizations to enhance the healing environment of our facilities and to bring additional culture, peace and comfort to our patients.”
