A little rain can’t stop Red October runners!
Despite less than perfect weather that included bouts of rain and breeze, the 19th annual Oakwood Red October Run realized its largest registration yet, including a total of 824 registered runners, walkers and “junior milers.” Wow!

Many thanks are due to the nearly 75 Oakwood employees, physicians and hospital volunteers who helped make our 2009 event possible by participating as race day volunteers. This year’s volunteer corps also included the participation of more than 20 Wayne Memorial High School JROTC cadets, who donned their ADUs and staffed our three on-course water stations.

Along with many “first-time,” recreational and even elite runners and walkers, this year’s event roster included 43 youth, parents and staff members from Barth Elementary School in Romulus. In addition to complimentary registration for the event, Oakwood provided training sessions for a group of Barth 4th –6th graders throughout the summer, preparing the young runners for their first 5k run. Sixteen Wayne Memorial High JROTC cadets also competed in the 5k run in conjunction with Oakwood’s youth and family fitness initiative.

This year’s Red October featured several new highlights including beautiful art glass awards produced as a result of Oakwood’s “Arts for the Spirit” community arts initiative in collaboration with Dearborn-based Furnace Design Studio.

Six overall running and walking event winners received beautiful blown glass vases adorned with Red October Run glass medallions. Two hundred four running and walking event place-winners received truly unique and impressive large glass medallions, each produced individually from a rare, “autumn colored” glass.

The Arts and Scraps Scrapmobile, on-hand for kids to create their own special head wear craft projects, was a huge hit, as was our first ever Jr. October Mile T-shirt design contest for kids.

The ever-popular 96.3 WDVD radio added extra fun and flair to event festivities, joining us at the race site to provide a remote broadcast and giveaways.
