Of the 400,000 people who suffer cardiac arrest only 10 percent survive to reach a hospital—and only four percent of those admitted will leave the hospital with their brain function intact. Oakwood Hospital & Medical Center’s Coronary Care Unit has been able to improve those odds through a process called therapeutic hypothermia: cooling the body temperature to slow blood flow and minimize brain damage.
